Protecting yourself from attack
We all know about mindless violence, it can happen anywhere, at any time; what do you do when a person tries to physically assault you? Call the police? Well, if you are lucky enough to have a cop nearby, that is one option, but what if there is no one to help you? Your assailant might be determined to cause you injury and may even have a weapon! It is important to know some basic self-defence techniques, which is what you acquire when you take up MMA.
Boost your fitness levels
One thing you will enjoy about MMA classes is the higher level of fitness and stamina, which definitely puts a spring in your step. Self-confidence is also boosted, as you feel better about yourself, and should you ever find yourself in a potentially dangerous situation, you can prepare accordingly.
Tips when being confronted by an assailant
Here are a few tips:
- Try to maintain distance between you and the attacker.
- Elbows and knees can be used as a wall of defence; lifting both elbows and one knee as the person approaches will give you protection.
- Takedown – The easiest way to take a person down is to step forward, put your right foot behind your attacker’s legs and push them backwards; this should give you enough time to flee the scene.
Any combat sport training will teach you some basics of self-defence, learn how to block, strike, kick and parry, and should you ever find yourself in a dangerous situation, you will know what to do.
